As DIRECTV shifted its strategic focus toward urban streaming markets, millions of rural satellite customers who built their subscriber base were left feeling forgotten. DIRECTV relied heavily on their brand mascot—a DVR "Genie"—to promise magical entertainment. But a mascot can’t mask poor service, hidden fees, or unreliable coverage.

Instead of ignoring the competitor's mascot, we weaponized it. We personified DIRECTV as the “Bad Genie”—a shabby, bumbling, ineffective wish-granter who fumbles every basic customer ask. By exposing the gap between DIRECTV’s promises and their actual performance, we positioned DISH as the dependable, no-nonsense alternative for viewers who just want their TV to work.

Across five broadcast spots, the Bad Genie fumbles wish after wish while DISH steps in as the no-nonsense solution. With a tongue-in-cheek tone and relatable premise, we turned competitor frustration into brand momentum — proving that DISH doesn’t need magic to deliver superior TV.
